According to Nielsen’s SocialGuide, 20 million users produced more than 300 million Tweets about television programming in Q1. The user interactions reflected engagement with more than 9,000 programs. For the week of June 24-30, BET overwhelmed virtually all other programming on Sunday, 6/30 with the 2013 BET Awards, which generated almost 10 million Tweets by viewers – more than ten times the volume of the next highest ranking show on the SocialGuide chart, MTV’s Catfish: The TV Show, which generated 776,155 Tweets.
Apple’s iOS mobile operating system is winning even more ground in mobile advertising market share as Apple’s share grew from 59% overall to 64% between May 2012 and May 2013 according to mobile ad firm Velti. However, African-Americans are more likely to be users of devices that use the Android operating system, such as those manufactured by Samsung. Whites and Hispanics are equally likely to use iPhone or Android devices. Separately, the Pew Internet & American Life Project previously found iPhone users are more likely to be wealthy and educated. Additionally, ComScore’s latest MobiLens report shows Apple ranked as the top phone maker with 39.2% of U.S. smartphone subscribers, up by three-tenths of a percentage point from the prior quarter, followed by Samsung with a 23% market share, up 1.7 points. HTC, Motorola, and LG, which rounded out the top five, all lost market share by as much as 0.6% in HTC’s case.
Nielsen’s Mobile Shopping Report finds, in the first quarter, more than eight in ten U.S. mobile consumers used their devices for shopping within the past 30 days. The 84% who shop on smartphones and tablets marks a five percentage-point increase from the year-earlier period. Mobile shopping is defined as using a device to make a purchase, research products, find stores, check prices, read or write a review, use shopping lists, or comment about a purchase on a social networking site. More than a quarter of mobile shoppers say they now buy more frequently via mobile than on their PCs.
GSMA Intelligence’s new global carrier scoreboard found that AT&T has joined Verizon in the top 3 in mobile revenues, leapfrogging Vodafone, the largest of the multinationals. China Mobile is still the number one carrier in the world with over 726 million subscribers and revenue of over $90 billion in the last 12 months. AT&T Mobility has over 107 million subscribers and a revenue of $59 billion and Verizon Wireless has 114 million subscribers with revenues over $65 billion over the last 12 months.
In a new study U.S. Home Broadband & WiFi Usage Forecast, 2012-2017, wireless and mobile communications market strategy consultancy iGR forecasts that WiFi devices will account for 86% of broadband data use in U.S. households in 2017.
Six percent of online adults are Reddit users, according to a nationally representative survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. This is the first survey that specifically examines Reddit as a standalone platform. It finds that young men are especially likely to visit the site. Some 15% of male Internet users ages 18-29 say that they use Reddit, compared with 5% of women in the same age range and 8% of men ages 30-49.
